Forty minutes of driving and overanalyzing Aiden’s behavior later, Keaton skirted the edges of the map blip that was Heflin, Virginia. He had turned onto a horribly cracked two-lane highway leading away from what passed as a town. This set him on a series of winding curves in search of a gravel road so small that he would’ve missed it had GPS not told him it existed.

After he took a sharp right onto the microscopic path, it became clear with each twist and turn that he’d merely been admitted to a loose-rock version of the roller coaster he’d just exited. The gravel was fine if he followed the well-worn ruts laid out like train tracks, but the slightest hiccup sent him skidding, despite the Expedition’s bulk, and getting back into the grooves was a hell of a process.

Foot off the gas, Holland. Foot off the gas.

Slowing to speeds that would’ve embarrassed his grandmother, Keaton kept his eyes peeled for anything up ahead. The map said he was close. Four minutes away, to be exact. The densely packed Virginia woods lining each side of the labyrinthine road kept the countryside’s secrets close to its vest.

Why’s it gotta be a forest again? How much effing timberland can there possibly be in this world?

The environment was far too reminiscent of Nightmare Forest and its unbearable solitude. Keaton imagined Athaliah peeking out from the brush, crouching behind tree trunks with a bloodied knife in her hand or tucked into the branches high above his head, smiling down at him like a bloodthirsty fiend.

You will be the death of all that you love. You are your own worst nightmare.

His hand began to throb in its cast.

Promising himself that moving to Arizona was a viable option he could give in-depth consideration to later, Keaton crept around the curves and tried to ignore the goose bumps rushing over his skin.

“First we have Tammy Fletcher’s home, surrounded by an evergreen militia. Then we have Jimmy Zampa’s house down a dead-end country road in the middle of nowhere. Now I’m on my way to check on Ollie Weber at an address so rural it’s literally buried in the woods. Starting to see a pattern here.”

Those who’d known the Fabbris before the couple’s untimely deaths seemed to live in a perpetual state of hiding.

Aiden hadn’t said exactly who or what Ollie Weber was involved with. Only that he might be involved “in all of this.” And that the man could be in danger. A target.

I’m not a rocket scientist, but I can do that math. Dude knew the Fabbris and, from the sounds of it, a little too well.

“But how did Aiden know that?” The nagging suspicion that he was missing a large, vital piece of the puzzle churned fire in Keaton’s gut. “Did he know Ollie personally? This isn’t the kind of information they just hand out at the Bureau, and Mob associates aren’t the kind of people you just casually meet up with for Taco Tuesdays.”

As Keaton rounded the next bend, his suspicions were confirmed.
